Udawalawe National Park

If your dream is to see wild elephants in Sri Lanka, Udawalawe is where that dream comes true — almost guaranteed. Unlike the dense forests of Yala, Udawalawe's open grasslands and scrub make it incredibly easy to spot wildlife, and the park's elephant population is estimated at over 600. It is common to see herds of 50 or more elephants, including adorable calves who stay close to their mothers, all grazing, bathing, and socializing in broad daylight. The park was created in 1972 when the Udawalawe Reservoir was built, and the resulting mix of grassland, forest, and water has become an elephant paradise. The Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, located near the park entrance, rehabilitates orphaned calves for release back into the wild — visitors can watch feedings without interfering with the animals' natural behavior. Jeep safaris here are less crowded than Yala, the terrain is easier to navigate, and the elephant sightings are so consistent that even the guides seem amazed.
