Adam's Peak

At 2,243 meters, Adam's Peak — known locally as Sri Pada, or the Sacred Footprint — is the most spiritually significant mountain in Sri Lanka, and perhaps one of the most meaningful pilgrimage sites in the world. Buddhists believe the footprint-shaped depression at the summit belongs to the Buddha; Hindus say it is Shiva's; Muslims and Christians attribute it to Adam, the first man. For centuries, people of all faiths have climbed 5,500 steps through the night, guided by strings of lights, to reach the summit before dawn and witness a phenomenon that feels almost supernatural: the shadow of the peak cast onto the morning clouds, creating the illusion of a perfect pyramid of light. The climb is grueling — there is no way around that — but the shared experience binds strangers together. You will meet barefoot villagers, foreign trekkers, elderly monks, and families with small children, all helping each other up the endless staircase. When the sun finally breaks the horizon and illuminates the hill country below, you understand why this mountain has been called "the navel of the world."
