Kataragama

Kataragama is one of the most spiritually charged places in Sri Lanka — a small town in the southeast that holds immense significance for Buddhists, Hindus, and indigenous Vedda people alike. The Kataragama Devalaya, dedicated to the god Skanda (also known as Murugan or Kataragama Deviyo), is the heart of the town, and the annual Esala Festival in July or August draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who walk for days, many barefoot, to fulfill vows and seek blessings. The nearby Kiri Vehera, a pristine white dagoba built in the 6th century BC, is one of the most important Buddhist monuments in the country. What makes Kataragama unique is its atmosphere of devotion: you will see devotees carrying kavadi — ornate metal frames decorated with peacock feathers — while others pierce their cheeks and tongues with skewers as acts of penance. The town sits at the edge of Yala National Park, and wild elephants sometimes wander the outskirts at dusk. Even for non-religious visitors, Kataragama is unforgettable — it is a window into the depths of Sri Lankan faith and tradition.
