Tangalle

Tangalle is what the southern coast of Sri Lanka used to be before the rest of the world discovered it. This quiet beach town, sitting between the hustle of Mirissa and the surf breaks of Arugam Bay, offers something increasingly rare: silence. The Rekawa Turtle Conservation Project, just east of town, protects five species of sea turtles who nest on these beaches, and if you visit at night during nesting season (November to April), you may witness a 200-kilogram green sea turtle laying her eggs in the sand. The nearby lagoons, like Hummanaya, offer kayaking through mangrove tunnels, while inland, ancient rock temples hidden in the forest remind you that this coastline has been inhabited for thousands of years.
