Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is not just a rainforest — it is a living museum of evolution. This 88-square-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site is the last viable remnant of Sri Lanka's ancient lowland rainforest, a habitat that once covered the island but has now shrunk to this precious sliver. What makes Sinharaja extraordinary is its biodiversity density: it is home to more than 60 percent of Sri Lanka's endemic tree species, 50 percent of its endemic mammals, and a staggering variety of birds, reptiles, and insects found nowhere else on Earth. Walk the trails with a local guide and you will learn to spot the Sri Lankan blue magpie, the green pit viper coiled on a branch, and the giant tropical trees whose buttress roots are larger than a car. The forest is dense, humid, and teeming with life — leeches are common, the air is thick with moisture, and the canopy blocks most sunlight. But that is precisely the point.
