Horton Plains

Horton Plains is where Sri Lanka's geography becomes surreal. At 2,100 meters above sea level, this high-altitude plateau feels like another country entirely — chilly winds, stunted cloud forests, and landscapes that look more like the Scottish moors than a tropical island. The park's centerpiece is World's End, a sheer 880-meter cliff drop that offers views so vertiginous they can trigger a physical reaction. On clear mornings, you can see all the way to the southern coast. The 9-kilometer circular trail to World's End and Baker's Falls takes you through landscapes that shift constantly: misty grasslands where sambar deer graze silently, forests draped in moss and orchids, and streams that emerge from the earth as mysteriously as they vanish. Horton Plains is also the headwaters of three of Sri Lanka's major rivers — a fact that seems impossible until you stand at the edge and watch clouds form below you. The climate here is harsh: temperatures can drop to 5°C, and the wind cuts through inadequate clothing. But the reward is a kind of beauty that exists nowhere else on the island.
