Hikkaduwa

In the 1960s, Hikkaduwa was a sleepy fishing village until a group of hippie travelers discovered its perfect waves and coral reefs, and the rest is history. Today, it is Sri Lanka's most energetic beach town — a colorful collision of surf culture, backpacker hostels, seafood restaurants, and underwater wonder. The Hikkaduwa National Park, a marine sanctuary just offshore, protects one of the last remaining coral reefs on the island's western coast. Snorkelers can swim among parrotfish, Moorish idols, and hawksbill sea turtles in water so warm it feels like a bath. The surf breaks here are forgiving, making Hikkaduwa the ideal place to learn — dozens of schools line the beach, and a two-hour lesson will have you standing on a board. When the sun sets, the beach road transforms: reggae bars blast Bob Marley, fresh lobster is grilled over charcoal, and fire dancers spin flames against the darkening sky.
