Kitulgala is where Sri Lanka's adventure scene was born. This small town, straddling the Kelani River, became internationally famous when David Lean filmed "Bridge on the River Kwai" here in 1957 — the old concrete bridge still stands, a piece of Hollywood history in the middle of the jungle. But today, Kitulgala is known for something far more exciting: white water rafting. The Kelani River offers Grade 3 and 4 rapids that surge through a gorge of boulders and rainforest, and the two-hour rafting experience is one of the most exhilarating activities in Sri Lanka. Beyond rafting, Kitulgala is a base for jungle treks, waterfall abseiling, birdwatching, and even cave exploration. The surrounding forest is part of the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, home to endemic birds like the Sri Lanka spurfowl and Sri Lanka junglefowl. The town itself is small and unpretentious — riverside cafés serve rice and curry, guesthouses are simple, and the focus is entirely on the raw natural playground that surrounds you. Kitulgala proves that Sri Lanka is not just beaches and temples — it is also adrenaline.
