Overview

About Pinnawala

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 to care for five orphaned baby elephants — today, it is home to nearly a hundred, the largest captive herd in the world. But this is not a zoo. The elephants here roam relatively freely, bathing twice daily in the Maha Oya River in a spectacle that draws visitors from across the globe. Watching a herd of massive elephants splash, play, and spray water in the shallows is one of those travel moments that stays with you forever. What makes Pinnawala genuinely meaningful is its conservation mission: many of these elephants were rescued from the wild after losing their mothers or becoming separated from their herds. The orphanage has successfully bred over 70 calves in captivity, a remarkable achievement. Nearby, the Millennium Elephant Foundation offers more ethical, hands-off encounters where you can walk with elephants through the forest without riding them. For families, animal lovers, and anyone who has ever dreamed of standing close to these gentle giants, Pinnawala delivers a profound experience.
