Wilpattu is where you go when you have already seen Yala and want something deeper, wilder, and more mysterious. Sri Lanka's largest national park, Wilpattu is defined by its "villus" — natural lakes formed by shallow depressions in the earth that fill with rainwater, creating watering holes that attract wildlife in abundance. The landscape is different from anywhere else on the island: dense monsoon forest, open plains, coastal belt, and scrubland all exist within the park's boundaries. Leopards prowl here, but they are harder to spot than in Yala, which makes every sighting feel earned and exhilarating. The park was closed for much of the civil war, and even now it receives far fewer visitors than Yala, giving it a feeling of genuine wilderness. The morning mist rising from the villus at dawn, the calls of jungle fowl echoing through the forest, and the sudden appearance of a sloth bear from the undergrowth — Wilpattu rewards patience with moments of pure magic. It is not the easiest safari, but it may be the most rewarding.
