Anuradhapura is not just an ancient city — it is the cradle of Sri Lankan civilization. For over a thousand years, from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD, this was the capital of a kingdom that shaped Buddhism, art, engineering, and governance across South Asia. What remains is staggering: the Jetavanaramaya stupa, which was once the third-tallest structure in the ancient world after the pyramids; the Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest historically documented tree on Earth, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment; and vast monastic complexes that once housed thousands of monks. The scale of Anuradhapura is hard to comprehend until you are standing in it — the dagobas rise like man-made mountains, the stone pillars of royal palaces still stand in geometric precision, and the massive reservoirs testify to an irrigation system so advanced that it sustained a population of hundreds of thousands. Pilgrims in white robes still circumambulate the stupas at dawn, their prayers carried on the same breeze that has blown across these sacred grounds for two millennia. It is, quite simply, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
