Mannar

Mannar is Sri Lanka's forgotten coast — a windswept peninsula on the northwest that most travelers never reach, and that is precisely what makes it special. This was once the closest point to India, connected by Adam's Bridge (Rama Sethu), a chain of limestone shoals that Hindu tradition says was built by the monkey god Hanuman. Today, the bridge is a protected marine ecosystem, but local fishermen still tell stories of walking to India in generations past. Mannar's landscape is otherworldly: baobab trees, believed to have been planted by Arab traders centuries ago, tower over arid scrubland; wild donkeys roam freely, descendants of animals brought by the Portuguese; and the beaches are so empty that you can camp under the stars without seeing another soul. The Mannar Fort, built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch, overlooks the Gulf of Mannar, while the nearby Thiruketheeswaram Temple is one of the oldest and most sacred Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka.
