For three decades, Jaffna was cut off from the rest of Sri Lanka by civil war — and that isolation has preserved something precious. This vibrant northern city, the cultural heartland of Sri Lankan Tamils, feels distinctly different from anywhere else on the island. The cuisine is spicier and more coconut-heavy, the Hindu temples are more colorful and elaborate, and the language you hear on the streets is Tamil, not Sinhala. Jaffna Fort, built by the Dutch in 1680, is one of the finest colonial forts in Asia, though scars from the war are still visible. The Jaffna Public Library, once one of the finest in Asia, was tragically burned in 1981 but has been beautifully rebuilt. Nearby, the islands of the Jaffna Peninsula offer pristine, barely visited beaches, while the legendary Jaffna crab curry — sweet, spicy, and swimming in coconut milk — is worth the flight alone. What makes Jaffna truly special is the warmth of its people: despite decades of hardship, they welcome visitors with a generosity that is both humbling and unforgettable.
